From September 13 to 15, 2024, the eighth edition of the International Hannibal Classic – Memorial Sergio Sorrentino took place at the new Marina Monfalcone. The event, dedicated to vintage and classic yachts, saw the participation of 22 boats, with Serenity winning among the Vintage Yachts, Nembo II among the Classic Yachts, and Betelgeuse in the Open Classic category. In the Sciarrelli class, Agos stood out, while Aspasia triumphed among the "Passere."
For Marina Monfalcone, it is an honor to host such a high-profile event, which strengthens the bond between nautical tradition and innovation.
The event, organized by the Yacht Club Monfalcone under the patronage of the FIV, C.I.M., and AIVE, has reaffirmed Monfalcone as a key hub for the sailing world, promoting values of sustainability and local craftsmanship.
Among the 22 participating boats, the oldest was the 1858 gaff cutter Sorella, from the Italian Navy, hailing from the “Francesco Morosini” Naval School in Venice, along with Sagittario from 1972. The most recent was Nababbo II, a 2000 Passera built by Cantiere Alto Adriatico based on designs by the master of classic boats, Carlo Sciarrelli. The veteran of the regatta was 86-year-old Monfalcone native Roberto Benes, who raced aboard Pussycat, a 1979 catboat owned by Valter Gallana for 45 years. Among the largest boats was the Sciarrelli-designed Mattutina (hull number 107), an 18-meter bermuda ketch launched in 1988 by Cantiere Zucchetta of Venice. First-time participants included Buricchia III, a 1979 Swan 441 designed by Ron Holland, and the 1947 5 mR Corsair, restored over eight years by its Austrian owner, Gebhard Watzal.
